Fresh Tomaotes in Nov.?

Yes, it is possible. When the weather starts to cool down what I do is I go out and pick all the green tomatoes off my plants. I then put them in a box (those Angel Food Ministries meat boxes are perfect for this) and cover them with newspaper. Place the box in a cool dry place and check it every day or two. The tomatoes ripen in the box and you can use them as they ripen. Depending on how many you had you can possibly have fresh tomatoes in Nov. If you have an excess of tomatoes ripen at once you can freeze or can them to use in soups and sauces.

Desiree’s Reflections (Part 1)

As a child I was ill almost constantly with back to back tonsillitis and bladder infections. Which is probably the reason I have trouble with my immune system even now. Anyway, my earliest recollections are feverish deliriums from the high temperatures I always had.

I would wake up in the middle of the night burning up with fever and shaking from chills. I would wrap up in my blanket and crawl into my dad’s recliner and lay my feverish face against the cool leather. I would sit there and watch black and white Shirley Temple movies until my mother would find me a 6:00 a.m.

I was only four but knew the meanings of the words injection and penicillin very well. The minute I heard those words mentioned I knew what was coming and I would start to cry.

I am so saddened by this news. Dirty Dancing was my first movie obsession. You know when I saw how upbeat he was in his interview with Barbara Walters I was hoping that some miracle would happen and he would beat his pancreatic cancer. He was truly a movie icon and just a good guy. One of Hollywood’s stars went out tonight and I’m sure it will be felt across America.

Where do you write?

I read on a blog today that Hemingway and a couple of other famous writers stood up when they wrote. Yea, they actually had stand up desk. Me, I have an office that also doubles as a schoolroom when I’m homeschooling my son. It’s not a large room but we have managed to cram all our essentials in here. I have an L-shaped desk and he has smaller desk with a shelf. Occasionally, while my son is doing his school work I will write in the dining room on my laptop. So, where do you write? Do you write just anywhere or do you have a room you retreat to? Have you ever tried standing up?

Writing books?

Do you have a favorite writing book? One that has made you the writer you are today? One that you couldn’t live without?

I have read quite a few books on the subject of fiction writing and quite frankly they didn’t really help me. I have heard several people say that not only did they not help them but they actually confused them more. First of all, the things they tell you is mostly common sense that most good writers already know. Second, a lot of the way you write and how you process things is a personal choice. So, in my opinion a book is not going to help you develop your own personal voice. The only thing that is going to help is to WRITE and write A LOT. Start a blog, or a journal, just anything that has to do with writing. Pay attention to details and descriptions these will prove to be highly important in the future. Anytime something pops into your head jot it down. Carry a pencil and paper with you where ever you go. You know nothing gets the creative juices flowing like a freshly sharpened pencil and a blank piece of paper. So, go, WRITE and be productive.

I would like to blog about something that has nothing to do with writing but has everything to do with me…psoriasis.

What is psoriasis you might ask. Let’s start with what it’s not. It is NOT contagious and it is not just a skin disease. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the immune system. The exact cause is unknown; however, researchers believe that heredity, environment, and the immune system may also play a role in psoriasis.

Normally, skin cells that are formed in the deepest layers of your skin make their way to the surface. They mature, are sloughed off the body’s surface, and replaced with new skin cells from below. This cycle takes approximately a month.

In people with psoriasis, however, the immune system is mistakenly activated, resulting in an abnormally rapid skin cell cycle. This means the cells move from the deepest layers of your skin to the surface in about four days. Since they migrate so quickly, they don’t have time to properly mature. In the most common type of psoriasis, plaque psoriasis, the cells accumulate on the surface, forming raised, red patches or “lesions.” Basically, to sum it up your skin is attacking itself.

This has resulted in my being borderline agoraphobic. I have it on my legs, arms, hands, scalp and occasionally my face so, there is no covering it up sometimes. Rather than go out and be stared at I stay in for days and sometimes months. My husband doesn’t understand why I feel like I have to hide away. I just wish more people were made aware of this disorder so people like myself could enjoy life more and not have to worry about what people thought.
